One out of every three women worldwide will be physically, sexually or otherwise abused during her lifetime with rates reaching 70 percent in some countries.-Amnesty International
Sen. Kerry will be presiding, and the International Violence Against Women Act (I-VAWA) will be discussed. The bill will be introduced in the Senate hopefully shortly after the hearing.
I-VAWA, if passed, will address issues of global violence against women, and require a US response. It will create a new office in the State Dept, Office of Global Women’s Initiatives, and identify specific focus countries, mostly likely in the developing world. I-VAWA will give the US the resources to prioritize combating violence against women.
Women’s advocacy groups are encouraging attendance at the hearing this Thursday, in order to show the Committee that these issues are important. Details are:
