Quick Hit: Hearing this Thursday on I-VAWA

This Thursday, the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations will hold a hearing on VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN: GLOBAL COSTS AND CONSEQUENCES

Sen. Kerry will be presiding, and the International Violence Against Women Act (I-VAWA) will be discussed. The bill will be introduced in the Senate hopefully shortly after the hearing.

I-VAWA, if passed, will address issues of global violence against women, and require a US response. It will create a new office in the State Dept, Office of Global Women’s Initiatives, and identify specific focus countries, mostly likely in the developing world. I-VAWA will give the US the resources to prioritize combating violence against women.

Women’s advocacy groups are encouraging attendance at the hearing this Thursday, in order to show the Committee that these issues are important. Details are:
