The Mexico City government voted 39-20 to allow people of the same sex to marry and to adopt children. The law is being rewritten to redefine “marriage” as a “free union between two people.” Mayor Marcelo Ebrard is expected to sign the bill into law.
Thus, Mexico City is the first Latin American city or nation to legalize marriage between two people of the same sex. Currently, civil unions are permissible in Uruguay and in the Mexican state of Coahuila.
As always, the Catholic Church has opposed same-sex marriage, this time giving the argument that the proposal is immoral, saying that marriage must hold the promise of procreation, something that is only possible between a man and a woman.
This is another great piece of news from a Spanish-speaking, Roman Catholic dominated country, following up on Spain’s move to make it easier to obtain abortions, and Spain’s five-year old law that allows same-sex marriage.

Mike, I fully agree with ALL your posts…keep fighting for civil rights…I’m pro-choice (abortion as a last resort & not for birth control) and gay-friendly (tho I’m hetero), and a civil rights advocate. Oh yeah – doctor-assisted suicide advocate and medical MJ advocate, which just became legal here in NJ. I commend you for your dedication and hard work.
