White House spokesman Robert Gibbs has made gaffs before and, in my opinion, is far too glib with the press. But his latest statements on the trial of alleged 9/11 plotter Khalid Sheikh Mohammed likely are Gibbs’ worst mistakes. On CNN’s “State of the Union” show, Gibbs said: “Khalid Sheikh Mohammed is going to meet justice and he’s going to meet his maker. He will be brought to justice and he’s likely to be executed for the heinous crimes he committed.”
Did he not consider how this could poison the trial? We now have the spokesman for the Obama Administration, which includes the prosecutors for the trial, commenting on what he expects the outcome to be. I haven’t heard any comments yet from the defense counsel, but I certainly expect that they will use this as an argument for why Mohammed cannot get a fair trial anywhere.
(And, BTW, what is Obama’s position on capital punishment?)
