Leila Ghannam, a high ranking woman in Fatah, has just been appointed the first female governor in Palestine. She will be overseeing Ramallah and adjacent area, al-Bireh.
Ghannam offers an encouraging rebuttal to accusations that her appointment was based on some sort of quota. She says:
“I was appointed to the position because of the president’s belief in my abilities, and not because I’m a woman.”
She does, however, recognize the possible positive effects her position will have.
“Despite the fact that I will regard the office from the position of the responsibility it carries, and not as a woman, there is no doubt that I can be more sensitive to issues such as women, children, and welfare.”
